Spaces designed to adapt
Renovation of the Assembly room and Wedding room at Mairie d’Évry-Courcouronnes reflects a clear architectural ambition: to create civic spaces that balance representational character with everyday functionality. Designed by SAFA, the project brings together institutional elegance, adaptability, and durability - essential qualities for rooms used daily by municipal staff and the public alike.
Closely connected yet distinct in use, the two rooms are conceived to function independently or as a single, coherent space. During city assemblies, the Wedding room transforms into a public seating area, placing high demand on furniture that can be moved, stored, and reconfigured efficiently.
This required solutions capable of supporting frequent change while maintaining comfort, clarity, and a consistent architectural expression. The interiors combine bespoke tables with flexible seating, allowing spaces to shift seamlessly between formal assemblies, ceremonies, and public events.
A seating solution built for civic use
For seating, SAFA selected 40/4 chairs by HOWE. The choice was driven by the chair’s timeless expression, lightweight construction, and exceptional stackability - key attributes in environments where layouts change regularly and storage space is limited.
Different variants of the 40/4 were introduced to respond to specific functional needs while preserving a unified visual language. Upholstered and veneered versions subtly enrich the material palette, reinforcing the calm, institutional atmosphere of the rooms.
“We were looking for furniture that was elegant and institutional, yet also flexible and lightweight.”
